This post was updated 19.3.26: Please always double check with up to date sources such as the official UK government website for entry requirements for the United Kingdom, as requirements can update and change at any time.
Entry and transit requirements for the United Kingdom
The UK authorities no longer apply any COVID-19 related restrictions for entering or transiting through the United Kingdom. However, travel rules can change at short notice, so it is your responsibility to check that you meet the requirements of your final destination and any transit countries before departure.
COVID-19
There are currently no COVID-19 requirements in place for travel to the UK. You do not need to complete a Passenger Locator Form (PLF), and no PCR or antigen tests are required either before departure or after arrival. There is also no requirement to show proof of vaccination, and no quarantine is imposed on arrival.
These rules apply both to entering the country and to transiting through it, regardless of your vaccination status.
Travel documents
You must travel with a passport that is valid for the entire duration of your stay. Depending on your nationality, you may also need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling.
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) – what’s new for 2026
From 25 February 2026, many travellers from countries that do not require a visa, including EU member states, the United States, Canada and Australia, must obtain an ETA before travelling to the UK. This also applies if you are only transiting through the country, except in some cases of airside transit at specific airports.
The ETA is applied for online or via the official app and is digitally linked to your passport. Once approved, it is valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires if that comes sooner. It is a mandatory requirement for boarding, so you will not be allowed to travel without it.
Airport transit
There are no health-related requirements for airport transit, meaning no tests, forms or certificates are needed. However, depending on your nationality and the type of transit, whether you remain airside or pass through border control, you may still need an ETA or a transit visa.
