Study Holiday in Cape Town: What to Expect
Cape Town is an incredible city. With its scenic cable car, mild climate, enchanting beaches and lively African culture, you’ll quickly realise this is the perfect destination for your study holiday.
Your school, LAL School, is located in the trendy Sea Point neighbourhood, known for its restaurants, cafés, shops and its seaside Promenade. You’ll stay in quad rooms with shared bathrooms, in modern residences close to the school and supervised 24/7 by security staff. You won’t have to worry about meals either: you’ll have full board with a self-service system and packed lunches on excursions.
During your stay, you’ll have the chance to explore Cape Town and its surroundings through various organised outings. Among these, two full-day excursions will take you to the Cape of Good Hope & Boulders Beach and the Cheetah Sanctuary & Lion Park.
In addition, the school features common areas and a garden with a swimming pool where you can relax during your free time. Evenings will be lively with fun activities like game nights, ice skating, mini golf, cinema trips and bowling. Sundays are free from scheduled activities, but the school will organise optional trips accompanied by the Group Leader.
As you can see, the extracurricular activities are numerous, and each outing will require specific items to bring with you, so plan accordingly.
What to Pack for Your Study Holiday
To fully enjoy your study holiday in Cape Town, it’s essential to prepare everything you’ll need. Here are some practical tips on what to bring:
Clothing
-
Light clothing: Cape Town has a mild climate, so bring lightweight and comfortable clothes for the day. Keep in mind that LAL School has a garden with a swimming pool, so cool and airy clothes will be ideal.
-
Windbreaker: Evenings can be cool, especially near the coast. A windbreaker will come in handy during evening outings to the V&A Waterfront and walks along the Promenade.
-
Comfortable shoes: For trips and excursions, you’ll need comfortable walking shoes. You’ll be visiting places like Table Mountain and Lions Head, so bring good trekking shoes.
-
Swimsuit: Don’t forget your swimsuit for the school pool and Cape Town’s beaches.
-
Sportswear: If you enjoy physical activity, bring some sporty clothes. LAL School also organises activities like mini golf and ice skating.
-
Hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun during outdoor excursions like those to Boulders Beach and the Ostrich Farm.
Useful Accessories
-
Backpack: A small backpack for day trips will be very useful for carrying water, snacks and personal items during visits to the Two Oceans Aquarium and the Cheetah Sanctuary & Lion Park.
-
Water bottle: Stay hydrated during your adventures. A water bottle is essential, especially on hot days.
-
Sunscreen: The sun can be very strong, so protect your skin during visits to Robben Island and Seal Island.
-
First-aid kit: A small kit with plasters, disinfectant and basic medicines will be useful in case of minor incidents.
Important Documents
-
Passport and visas: Before departure, make sure your passport is valid and check whether you need a visa for South Africa.
-
School documents: Bring the documents provided by the school for your study holiday. You probably won’t need them, as your tutor will always be with you, but when you’re abroad, it’s always best to be prepared to solve any issues.
-
Insurance and health certificates: Bring a copy of your vaccination summary, your health card, and any medical certificates relating to specific conditions, food intolerances or allergies. Don’t worry about insurance: with Astrolabio you’ll be covered by the Polizza Amica, which includes medical expenses and luggage damage/theft.
Technology and Entertainment
-
Smartphone and charger: Don’t forget your smartphone — and more importantly, the charger. A power bank may also be useful for long days and excursions.
-
Camera: To capture unforgettable moments during your trips and evening activities organised by the school.
-
Books and magazines: For relaxing between activities.
-
Headphones: For listening to music or watching films during travel or downtime.
Handy Tips for the Perfect Suitcase
To make sure you’ve packed everything you need for your study holiday in South Africa, here are a few questions to ask yourself as you get ready:
-
Have you checked the weather for the season in the region of South Africa where you’ll be staying?
Knowing the climate in Cape Town will help you decide whether to pack lightweight clothes for warm days and a windbreaker for cooler evenings. Keep in mind that the weather can vary, so being prepared for all conditions is key. -
Did you remember to pack all important travel documents in your hand luggage and not in your checked suitcase?
Documents like your passport, visas, health insurance and school paperwork should always be close at hand. This way, if your checked bag goes missing, you won’t be caught off guard. -
Have you thought about which items you don’t need to bring because you can buy them once you arrive?
Everyday items like shampoo, soap and toiletries can easily be bought locally, saving space and weight in your luggage.
-
Have you made a detailed list of everything you’ve packed?
Creating a list of all the items you’re bringing can be really helpful in case your luggage gets lost or stolen. It’ll make filing a claim with your insurance much easier and quicker. -
Have you checked how many bags your airline allows you to check in and carry on board?
Knowing the limits for hand and checked luggage will help you avoid extra fees at check-in.
Are you feeling more relaxed after reading this list? By following these simple tips, you’ll be well prepared and ready to enjoy your study holiday in South Africa without any unnecessary stress.
